Are You Man Enough to Try It?

‘Fellas, take a tip from me. The gals all go for a guy with well-groomed hair’.  —  Dick Clark, Brylcreem ad, circa 1960.

Sigh. Smiley sigh. A very little sister’s smiley sigh.

It’s Saturday night and brother Orest’s primping for a night on the town. 007-style.

Wash up. Towel-steam face. Old Spice shaving cream. New Gillette razor. Down one cheek. Down the other. Right and left. Throat. No cuts. Old Spice after-shave.

And the hair. Brylcreem. Just a dab. Black tooth comb. Part on the right side. Comb Brylcreem through hair with right hand, gentling caressing the hair back and down behind the ear to the nape with the left hand.

Then the left side. Hair back and down behind the ear.

Then the finale.

Comb top of hair directly back and with left hand, create that pushed out, up and back curve for the front with the comb used as a guide. The back of the right hand for the hair to push against. And finishing off with a little comb through the curve on top straight up, while left hand ever-so-gently pushes forward to reinforce that “up-sweep-turn-to-the-back-thing”. Another slight brush of the left hand over the front.

Perfect.

Fancy dry-cleaned, medium-starched white shirt. With french cuffs. Onyx and gold cuff links.

Pressed light wool slacks. Leather belt. Gold buckle.

Spiffy.

White socks. Really white socks.

Polished black shoes. Laces in-tact.

Black bow tie. Now the Old Spice cologne.

Dashing.

One last comb through. More Brylcreem?

Nope. A little dab’ll always do ya.

One last smiley sigh.
