Putin

I grieve for Ukraine, I can’t see any way that that country can come out of the current crisis even, let alone ahead.

Some of you may recall that in my very first post on this subject I lamented the fact that the thug Yanukovich – who had been elected in a fair process – had been deposed by street riots. The Ukrainians really blew this one, they let Viktor flee to Moscow. Wrong! They had to keep him in Kyiv where they could link him to the criminality of his behaviour as Ukraine’s president.

And Putin used Yanukovich’s ouster as evidence that the new

Ukrainian government was illegitimate, the product of fascist influences and deeply anti-Russian. But have you noticed that since Putin decided to annex Crimea, nothing has been heard of Yanukovich? As an aside, Russian TV routinely accuses Ukraine of fascism, and there is a grain of truth in the accusation. When Hitler invaded the USSR in 1941 there were Ukrainians who welcomed them with open arms as a means of throwing off the Russian yoke. They soon learned that Hitler was only interested in them insofar as they contributed to his conquest of Russia, and Ukrainian support for the Nazis fell off to almost zero. But today every European country – including Ukraine – has a generally insignificant minority of rabble rousers who espouse Nazism, probably the worst example is in Hungary. The difficulty is that Ukraine’s tiny Nazi clique has legitimatized Putin’s attack on the Ukrainian state.

While Putin accuses Ukraine of fascist leanings, the fact is that he has unleashed rampant fascism in eastern Ukraine. The Russian speakers in Donetsk are parading around with Russian flags and demanding annexation to Russia a la Crimea in blatant contravention of the US-UK-Russia treaty guaranteeing Ukraine’s borders in exchange for her disabling what was then the 3rd largest nuclear arsenal on earth.
