Pet Peeve #5
People say God is dead and Elvis is alive. So who do I believe?
A Rose by Any Other Name
For a country that to this day celebrates the squashing of the Red Coats and the tyranny of taxation, it’s somewhat perplexing that we recognize an adored entertainer, possibly of all time according to many, a pop legend to say the least, by conferring a royal title upon him, The King.
I suppose it’s more impressive than President Elvis or Senator Elvis. Certainly, no one was mocking the monarchy with the designation, or that would be mocking Elvis. Admittedly, Saint Elvis would be most inappropriate.
To satisfy both the political camps and the heart-throb fan clubs alike, I offer this, the enduring image of both, “The President and the King,” your choice of assignment.
‘Waggishly, this picture is said to be ‘of the two greatest recording artists of the 20th century‘.

Elvis Presley meeting Richard Nixon. On December 21, 1970, at his own request, Presley met then-President Richard Nixon in the Oval Office of The White House. Elvis is on the right. Waggishly, this picture is said to be ‘of the two greatest recording artists of the 20th century’. The Nixon Library & Birthplace sells a number of souvenir items with this photo and the caption, “The President & the King.” (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
So here’s the thing about God and Elvis
The R.I.A.A., governing body for certifying record sales, reported that Elvis sold more than 2.5 billion records worldwide making him the best selling solo artist in American history. All three of his Grammy awards — and there were only three — were for categories in the Gospel genre, and included “How Great Thou Art” (1967 and 1974) and “He Touched Me” (1972).
That’s the thing.

As for Psalm 47:7 For God is the King of all the earth;
sing ye praises with understanding.
A future, more serious post, in-the-making.
